A CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES
The Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus) is a critically endangered species. This majestic bird faces significant threats, such as habitat destruction and illegal hunting.
In Colombia, the population of this species has drastically declined, from 1,700 individuals in 2014 to only 100 in 2020.

ENCOURAGING NEWS,
THERE IS STILL HOPE
FOR THE SPECIES!
Our conservation program for the Great Green Macaw aims to fill knowledge gaps regarding the distribution and behavior of this species in Colombia. The findings have been encouraging—we have spotted it again in two (2) locations in Colombia.
Based on these findings, and through innovative methodologies such as bioacoustic monitoring and veterinary evaluation, effective conservation strategies are being developed, tailored to local realities. These strategies are designed to benefit both the community and the species within the Utría National Natural Park (PNNU) and its buffer zone.
